This is a pair of exceptionally rare armchairs, custom-designed by Charles Pfister for Metropolitan Furniture. They were specified for for use in Sears Tower in 1974. SOM, as it is known, refers to the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. During the mid to late 20th century, they were prolific in transforming corporate interiors in the US and internationally. As part of that, they would design their own furniture for various projects with their in-house interiors team. Pfister worked on SOM's interiors team for 15 years before starting his own practice, so this design can be considered one of his earlier independent works. The chairs have chromed tubular-steel cantilever frames, and they have black leather upholstered seats. The backs are upholstered in a velvety black material. We have documentation of the production versions having slightly differently shaped upholstered cushions. It is feasible that these cushions were custom for this job or that They were redone at one point. If the buyer would like another set of cushions made to fit the production examples, we can make that happen. The frames are completely original. These two chairs quite literally came from Sears Tower (when they were going through renovations recently).

Each chair measures 24 inches deep, 23.5 inches wide, and 27.5 inches high. They have an arm height of 25.75 inches, a seat height of 17.75 inches, and a seat depth of 15.5 inches. The leather shows patina and some signs of use, and the frames show some light scratches and scuffs. Overall, this important pair of armchairs is in very good condition. Please see photos.
