1955 BCS Secretarial Desk by George Nelson for Herman Miller in Walnut
This is a George Nelson for Herman Miller Basic Series Secretary Chest, circa 1955. The Basic Cabinet Series, or BCS, was a collection of wood storage solutions developed by Nelson in 1945. This example is done in walnut and has a drop-down front allowing for a writing or vanity surface. The piece has three drawers and retains its early hand-rubbed zinc C-pulls.
This chest measures 34.25 inches deep, 18.5 inches wide, and is 45.5 inches high. The desk pulls out an additional 16 inches in the front. It remains in great shape; the wood is rich and moist, and it has an attractive grain. There are some scratches and scuffs to the surface, especially around the legs. The veneer is all intact. Overall, this piece is in good condition with some wear. Please see photos.
