1959 Herman Miller Eames DAX Fiberglass Arm Shell Chair with Green Removable Pad
Listed for sale is a circa 1959 production Herman Miller Eames DAX dining / side chair with dark green original naugahyde removable pad and fiberglass shell (with painted back). The DAX is an iconic design by Ray and Charles Eames. This example showcases the shift toward the H base style, which follows the earlier X base. As noted in the photos, two of the glides are missing, though we can replace these with two new glides prior to shipping by request.
The removable pad is also noteworthy, in that these were later changed to fixed and glued-on pads. Because this one is removable, underneath is most likely a pristine original fiberglass surface. During the production of these chairs, Herman Miller would typically use assorted shells of varying colors, but paint the backs for the sake of consistency. As a result, under the seat could be vibrant or subdued. We have not yet removed it to check.
As far as condition overall, it remains delightfully original. There is a separation on the seat, only due to the stitching coming undone in that area. It could easily be glued back into position.
Measurements are: 31.25 inches tall by 25 inches wide and 23.5 inches deep.
