SOLD 1960s 50L Wassily Chair by Marcel Breuer for Knoll in Chromed Steel and Rust / Brown Leather
This is an original 1960s production Wassily chair for Knoll in brown leather, likely produced by Gavina during the time prior to Knoll taking over production. Notably, the chair retains its original Knoll label with 320 park avenue address. This was where Knoll's showroom was during the 1960s, thus helping to date the piece. During much of the 1960s, Knoll acted as a distributor for Gavina. By 1968, they purchased the company. Overall, this chair is in very good to excellent vintage condition with normal light wear from use. The leather and frame are remarkably intact.
One of the most unique yet recognizable chair designs ever, it was inspired by the frame of a bicycle and influenced by the constructivist theories of the De Stjil movement. This is one of Marcel Breuer's earliest designs, forever changing expectations over what the lines of a chair should be in order to be comfortable.
The chair measures 31 inches wide by 27 inches deep and 28.75 inches tall. The seat height is 16.5 inches and arm height is 23 inches.
