1951 Set of Four W199 Chairs By Ben Thompson And Walter Gropius For Thonet
This is an outstanding set of 4 W199 Birch Armchairs, designed by Walter Gropius and Ben Thompson for Gebruder Thonet in 1951. They were produced in Austria in the early 1950s and the listed price includes the set of 4 chairs. Their design features bent birch plywood legs, arms and back supports, and they have solid contoured nutwood seats and backs. Gropius was a co-founder of the Bauhaus school and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern architecture.
Each chair measures 21 inches deep, 25.5 inches wide, and is 29.5 inches high. Their seat height is 18 inches from the floor. This set has been stripped and freshly refinished and looks terrific. Overall, these truly scarce chairs are in excellent condition. Please see photos.
